What is the best MSR tent?

American engineer Larry Penberty founded Mountain Safety Research in 1969 to make climbing equipment safer. Over time this outdoor pioneer has become one of the benchmark brands in the sector, making highly safe, high-quality gear that opens the door to amazing adventures.

The brand’s flagship tent is the MSR Hubba Hubba NX. Although it’s on the pricey side, it’s one of the best high-end 2-person, 3-season tents on the market thanks to its weight and the quality of its materials.

What to look for when buying an MSR

As you’ll have seen, these MSR tents are among the best on the market, with top-quality materials and excellent resistance to extreme weather, so whichever you choose, you won’t go wrong.

When choosing one of these tents, consider:

Price

As always, this is the main thing. The more people the tent sleeps, and the more space and better materials it has, the higher the price. So ask yourself how you’ll use it: in the high mountains, or just for camping?

If you only want it for a holiday with your partner, we’d suggest these dome tent models instead: they’re cheaper and will do the job just as well.

Space

A large tent won’t give you much space if more people share it than the manufacturer states. As we always advise, put the space you need before the price: saving 40 euros could mean bad nights for lack of room. Always put space first.

Openings

You’ll have noticed that besides the main entrance, tents almost always have side openings or even second doors. It matters: the more openings, the better you can control the temperature inside. Believe us, in summer it’s essential, all the more so the more people there are in the tent.

Frequently asked questions

Is MSR a good brand for trekking and the mountains?

Yes. MSR (Mountain Safety Research) is a benchmark for technical gear: 3- and 4-season tents, stoves (gas or multi-fuel), water filters and purifiers, walking poles and snow gear (snowshoes, ice axes, anchors).

How do MSR’s lightweight trekking tents differ from its expedition tents?

Trekking/3-season (e.g. Hubba Hubba): low weight, ventilation and easy pitching come first.
4-season/expedition (e.g. Access, Remote): reinforced structure, better wind and snow resistance, and skirts and more closed fabrics.

What materials and poles does MSR use?

Technical fabrics (ripstop nylon, silicone/PU) and high-performance aluminium poles (e.g. DAC). The aim is a balance of weight, stiffness and durability.

What waterproofing is recommended for southern Europe?

As a general guide: flysheet 1,200–3,000 mm and groundsheet 3,000–10,000 mm, with sealed seams and a proper double skin. In very wet climates or for heavy use, go for a groundsheet with a high HH and a good footprint.

Inner first or flysheet first?

Many models can be pitched together (inner already clipped in) or fast & light with footprint + flysheet, handy for pitching quickly in the rain.

Do they ventilate well or suffer from condensation?

The 3-season range ventilates very well (mesh + vents). 4-season tents are more closed, so some condensation is normal: open two doors or the vestibule when it’s safe.

What’s a reasonable weight for a 2-person tent for hiking?

Depending on the range: 1.1–2.2 kg. Below 1.3–1.5 kg it’s ultralight, with more delicate materials and a higher price.

Which MSR stove should I choose (gas or multi-fuel)?

Gas (canister): light and easy (PocketRocket, WindBurner).
Multi-fuel (WhisperLite/DragonFly): perform better in cold and at altitude and take petrol or paraffin; they need more maintenance

Does MSR also make water filters?

Yes: pump, gravity and UV (e.g. Guardian, TrailShot/Trail Base). Choose by litres per day, weight and the quality of the water source. Look after the pre-filters and clean/backflush as the manual says.

Are spare parts and servicing available in the EU?

Yes, it’s one of their strengths: seals, pumps, membranes, stove and filter parts, poles and repair kits. Have the model and year to hand.

What warranty does MSR offer in the EU?

The legal minimum is 2 years for manufacturing defects. Keep the receipt and the model or serial code.

Which MSR accessories make a difference?

A dedicated footprint, high-grip pegs, reflective guy lines, dry bags, a windshield (stove outside the inner), a stove maintenance kit and snow stakes if you’re heading into snow.

Any tips on use and care to make it last longer?

Dry it completely before packing, avoid prolonged UV exposure, clean it with mild soap, reproof it if water stops beading, check the seam sealing and, on stoves, clean the jets and seals regularly.
