How to pitch a good tent.

Four parts decide whether you sleep dry and sound. In each guide we explain what each one is like on the models we recommend.

What we do

We analyse the tents, related products and accessories with the highest satisfaction and best value for money, to help you buy what you really need. We compare products and show you their pros and cons.

How we do it

We take the best-rated tents online as our reference, analyse the reviews and draw on our own experience to judge quality, price, practicality, efficiency and durability of materials.

Tell us what you think

Your comments count too. We love hearing what you think after buying, so we can keep improving our ratings: that way you help make the content better for you and for other readers.

We review tents based on reviews and prices

  1. In-depth analysis: we look closely at the best tents on the market, with their advantages and disadvantages. You’ll find the one that suits you, as we always give the 5 best options to choose from.
  2. Comparisons: we compare tents and essential accessories, pitting the best brands against each other to give you the strongest arguments when you buy.
  3. User and expert reviews: we gather the opinions of users, experts and our own, for informative, reliable content.

If you’re looking for a tent and don’t know which to buy, first know that there are many very different types. When choosing, think about size, weight and even colour. Think too about how you’ll use it and for which activity: you won’t take the same tent to a festival or to camp in the garden as for a bivouac high in the mountains.

The tent’s capacity should give each sleeper enough comfort for the sleeping bag they use. Allow room for luggage too, depending on your activities, the length of the trip, the temperature and whether you’ll use an airbed. Also look at ventilation, the quality of add-ons (inner tents, awnings, side walls), waterproofing and your budget.

Tent camping: our blog

Types of tent and where to buy them

⛺️ Cheap tents

A tent doesn’t have to cost much if you only want it for the odd camping trip with friends, a festival or just a day out in the countryside. Here you’ll find tents with great value for money.

⛺️ Large tents

These tents are perfect for big groups of friends. To enjoy camping and have some unforgettable days, they’re ideal for groups of 6 or more. They’re larger, very roomy models where you’ll sleep in comfort and have space for your luggage.

⛺️ Luxury tents

The boom in camping in recent years has grown the market for luxury tents: you camp in nature with all the comforts of a hotel. That’s the idea behind glamping.

⛺️ Family tents

As the name suggests, they’re designed for the whole family, sleeping 6 or 8 people. Comfortable and roomy, they give everyone a separate bedroom connected to a central living area.

⛺️ Tents for children

These tents make the perfect present for a child. Easy to set up, they come for indoors and outdoors, and in different shapes such as castles or tipis. They often come with extras like fairy lights or a carry bag.

⛺️ Ridge tents

New to camping and wondering what a ridge tent is? It’s the one that comes to mind when you think of a tent: it stands out for its triangular shape. Nowadays dome tents are more popular, as they make better use of the space at the ends.

⛺️ Dome tents

These are now the most widely used: light, quick and easy to pitch thanks to their pole system. They come in all sizes and are the most versatile: festivals, camping, trekking or travelling for your whole holiday.

⛺️ Tipi tents

Ever watched a western? Tipi tents are the ones you see in those films. Inspired by the tents of Native American peoples, they’re perfect for groups of friends or families of 4 or 5. They stand out for their large interior and pointed roof.

⛺️ Pop-up tents

These tents are also known as instant tents. They’re a variation on the dome tent whose big advantage is speed: throw them in the air and they open by themselves, ready in seconds. Very light and compact, they’re perfect for quick getaways with friends or a partner. For one or two people, they suit those with little pitching experience.

⛺️ Tunnel tents

This type of tent is perfect for big groups or families. As the name suggests, it’s tunnel-shaped, thanks to parallel arched poles running from side to side. Very roomy throughout, and thanks to the poles and guy lines (which hold the tent and pull the sides taut), there’s no central pole like on ridge tents. If you’re planning a good holiday, this is your tent.

⛺️ The best camping and garden gazebos

These outdoor gazebos for the garden, camping or festivals are usually very sturdy and heavy. Here we review the three best based on material quality, price and, as always, buyer reviews.

⛺️ Inflatable tents

You see more and more of these tents on campsites: with no rigid frame, they’re much easier to carry. They come in all sizes, for any kind of trip. Their weak point is toughness. At Pechón, on a stunning campsite on a small cliff, a couple pitched next to us with one of these. That night a very strong wind came off the sea and blew it down completely despite well-placed guy lines (our Coleman tent held perfectly).

Tents by capacity

The best 1-person tents

For a solo adventure, 1-person tents are an excellent choice. Among the best: the MSR Hubba NX and the ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 1. They’re light, easy to pitch and designed to keep you dry and comfortable in any weather.

The best 2-person tents

For a tent to share with a friend or partner, there’s plenty of choice. The best 2-person tents are roomy, durable and designed to keep two people comfortable and protected in any weather.

The best 3-person tents

For a group of three, there are several excellent tents, including the Coleman Coastline 3 Plus and the Naturehike Cloud-Up. Tough and roomy, they keep three people comfortable and dry in all conditions.

The best 4-person tents

For a group of four, several tents offer plenty of space and durability: the Coleman Sundome 4, one of our favourites for its quality and low price, the Justcamp Atlanta 4-person and the ALPS Mountaineering Meramac 4. They resist wind and water, offer plenty of room for sleeping and gear, and are easy to pitch.

The best tents for 5 or more people

For groups of five or more, with room for sleeping and luggage, these are our picks: the Core 9-person instant tent, the Coleman Galileo 5 and the Skandika Gotland 6. They offer plenty of space and are built to handle bad weather.

The most popular tent brands

Coleman tents

Easily one of the best tent brands and the industry leader. Wherever you go you’ll find something from this brand, which is over 120 years old: at campsites, on hikes or even at festivals, always surrounded by people having a good time.

Where does the brand come from? In the USA, its camp stoves changed the way soldiers ate in the field during the Second World War, hence its logo. Today it specialises in tents, sleeping bags, lighting and many more accessories.

For us, one of the best Coleman tents is the Coleman Coastline, for its versatility. It suits any kind of trip and stands up very well to the weather.

Ferrino tents

Another big brand, perhaps less well known than Coleman: Ferrino. Founded in Italy in 1870, it has become a leader in outdoor sports products, from tents and camping accessories to professional equipment.

If you want a tough, high-quality tent, Ferrino is your brand. For us, one of its best tents is undoubtedly the Kalahari 3-person.

Skandika tents

Another important, highly rated brand: Skandika. Its name evokes the capitals of northern Europe: Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. Specialising in tents, camping, fitness and rucksacks, it pays attention to detail and offers very good quality. We recommend it 100%.

For us, one of the best Skandika tents is the Skandika Hammerfest 4-person, perfect for a group of four or a family.

MSR tents

Larry Penberthy, an American engineer, founded Mountain Safety Research in 1969 to make climbing equipment safer. An outdoor pioneer, the company has become a benchmark in the sector, making very safe, high-quality kit built for great adventures.

Its flagship tent is the MSR Hubba Hubba NX: a bit pricey, but one of the best high-end 2-person tents on the market, for its weight and the quality of its materials.

Robens tents

Another quality brand specialising in the outdoors and tents. Robens was founded in 1973 by German Klaus Robens, who loved nature and adventure travel.

A Robens tent we really like: the Robens Arch 2, very easy to carry, for two people.

Mil-Tec tents

A quality brand focused on military equipment, clothing and accessories, founded in 1971 in Rottenburg. Its camouflage tents are perfect for adventurers who want to spend a night under the stars.

Our pick: its one-person Recon tent, very compact, with fibreglass poles. Besides the low price, we like the quality of the materials, its small porch and above all the room for gear, rare in a one-person tent. Very good ventilation.

Naturehike tents

If any brand listens to its customers, it’s Naturehike: its goal is to keep improving its products so they stay innovative and meet users’ needs. It designs and makes kit for hiking, climbing, camping and other outdoor sports.

Our favourite tent from the brand: the Naturehike Cloud-Up 2, 2-person and 4-season. A highly recommended brand for its quality, design and price.

Salewa tents

A pioneering brand with long experience designing and making outdoor products. Salewa tents mean great quality and care down to the smallest detail.

Our Salewa pick: the Salewa Micra II, very well designed and easy to carry. If you’re looking for a festival tent, this is it.

Geertop tents

We love this brand for its professionalism and the care it puts into its products. Geertop has its own factory and doesn’t outsource manufacturing, so it controls the whole production.

Geertop inspires families to get outdoors and have new adventures with affordable, quality kit. Our favourite: the Geertop one-person 3-4 season, easy to pitch, light, with two doors.

Outsunny tents

A brand specialising in family tents and camping changing tents. If you want a good-quality family tent, this is your brand.

We recommend the Outsunny changing tent and the Outsunny 3-4 person family tent. Prices are very low and the quality is decent for occasional trips with family or friends.

Easy Camp tents

A brand specialising in camping and all its accessories. Good products, less well known than Coleman or Ferrino, with original, good-quality tents such as the Easy Camp Galaxy 400, designed for spring and summer.

COLUMBUS tents

Columbus was founded in 1980 around outdoor products and accessories. Its quality shows in over 30 years of manufacturing. It’s an expert in tents, sleeping bags and rucksacks.

Our pick from this young, adventurous brand: the COLUMBUS Ultra 1, an XL one-person tent perfect for winter.

High Peak tents

Another camping specialist with long experience: founded in 1984, it offers great products in markets all over the world.

Looking for a cheap tent for a trip or a festival? Go for the High Peak Minilite 2-person: for around 35 euros you’ll have a tent that does the job.

Grand Canyon tents

For over 25 years this brand has promoted a family lifestyle built on the freedom of the outdoors, camping and glamping. We love it: its tents offer outstanding quality for the price.

Our favourite Grand Canyon tent: the Grand Canyon Cardova 1, octagonal, for one person and, best of all, 4-season. It costs around €65.

Regatta tents

Another very good brand with a long history, one of the leaders in designing all kinds of products, from clothing to tents. Like Grand Canyon, its prices are very affordable for the quality.

Its signature tent: the Regatta Malawi 2, 2-season and 2-person. Perfect for travelling, it also costs around 65 euros.

Amazon tents

You see more and more Amazon-brand tents, especially one model: the Amazon Basics Tent. The price surprises us for a 4-person tent. It’s mainly aimed at festivals: for around 50 euros you get a 4-person dome tent perfect for summer festivals with friends.

How to choose a tent

As you’ve seen, there are many types of tent: dome, tunnel, ridge, family… And many brands, such as Coleman or Ferrino. So it’s normal not to know which to buy, especially as there are also tents for different seasons.

Don’t worry: we’ll help you choose the right tent for you and your activity. If you’re not yet sure what you’re looking for, start with our comparisons by type above.

How to pitch a tent

Every tent pitches differently depending on its type and shape, but they all share a few steps.

First, choose suitable ground: as flat and even as possible, without holes or too many stones, because even on an airbed you’ll feel them. And of course, find the best view, then the best ground.

Next, spread the tent over the area, assemble the poles and feed them through their sleeves. Once it’s up, adjust its position as you like (tip: always point the door towards the most sheltered side).

Then peg the corners into the ground through their eyelets. Put the flysheet over the top, fastening the Velcro tabs to the poles for a better hold. Tension the guy lines so the tent is as firm and taut as possible, pegging them down or tying them to something solid like a branch.

All that’s left is to clean the inside, stow your luggage and enjoy the freedom of the outdoors.

Essential kit for tent camping

Tent camping is one of the most classic and rewarding ways to camp. There’s nothing like sleeping under the stars. But for a successful, comfortable trip, some kit is essential.

First, as you’ll know, you need a good tent: made of waterproof, breathable fabric, big enough for you and your gear, and well enough ventilated to stop condensation building up inside.

Second, you’ll need a sleeping bag suited to the season and the temperature where you’ll camp. Sleeping bags are rated by temperature range, so choose one that keeps you warm enough without overheating.

Finally, one of the most important things to bring is a sleeping mat or an airbed for your tent: it’s your guarantee of comfort. Always take a hand (or electric) pump so you can easily inflate your camping airbed when you arrive.

Enjoy your adventure!
