Large military tents

We have not found any large military tents, only military tents for one or two people. Here is our selection in case you are still interested.

What should you look for when buying one? Buying guide

As you will have seen, these tents are perfect for large groups and families with children who want to enjoy a great holiday outdoors. So one of the first things to decide when buying a large tent is how many people will share it. A tip: always buy for one more person than there are of you. For example, if there are 4 of you, buy a 5-person tent. That way you will always have a bit of extra room for your gear or for anything unexpected. In short, always put space before looks.

What should you bear in mind when choosing this type of tent?

Price

As with everything, this is the main factor. The more people a tent sleeps, and the more space and better materials it has, the higher the price. So ask yourself how you will use it: are you going on a two-week holiday, or just a weekend trip to see whether camping is for you?

Here is the trade-off again. If you will use it regularly or a lot, prioritise quality. If you only want to try camping, we suggest spending a little under €250.

Space

A large tent does not mean lots of space if more people share it than the manufacturer recommends. As we always say, put the space you need before the price: saving €40 can mean a bad night’s sleep because you are cramped, so always prioritise space.

Doors and vents

You will have noticed that, besides the main entrance, tents usually have side openings or even secondary doors. This is worth checking, because the more openings a tent has, the more control you have over the temperature inside. Believe us, it matters a lot in summer, and even more with lots of people in the tent (mosquito nets are a must).

Best by brand: our recommendations

Large tent by Coleman

We have already recommended the Coleman Octagon and the Coleman Ridgeline Plus Six Man, so here is another Coleman tent with similar features. It is another one we love; the only catch is that it is a bit pricey:

Should you buy a large tent from Decathlon or Amazon?

This is worth thinking about, although we have no doubts, because of the quality of the materials.

Amazon is where major brands in camping and outdoor gear, such as Coleman or Skandika, sell their products to reach more people.

These brands offer much higher quality than Decathlon’s own-brand tents, because they specialise in this kind of product. Needless to say, you will find better deals and better quality on Amazon than at Decathlon.

That is our opinion.

Is renting a large tent worth it?

Many people consider renting a tent to see whether they like camping before buying one. Our advice is that before renting a large tent, you try buying a budget tent to see if you enjoy it, as you can find tents from around €30.

Then, if you decide this hobby is for you, go for a bigger tent.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a “large” tent?

Usually models for 4 to 8+ people, with standing height of 190–220 cm and several areas (bedrooms plus a living area or porch).

Are the stated berths realistic for adults?

As a rule of thumb, subtract one berth from the manufacturer’s figure to be comfortable and leave room for luggage and sleeping mats.

Inflatable or poled: which is better for a large tent?

Inflatable tents go up very quickly and handle wind well; aluminium-poled tents weigh a little less at the same size and are usually cheaper. If easy pitching is your priority, go inflatable; if price and weight matter more, go for poles.

What hydrostatic head do I need in a large tent?

A good starting point: 2,000–3,000 mm on the flysheet and 3,000–5,000 mm on the groundsheet, with taped seams. If you camp somewhere very wet, go higher on the flysheet.

How do I manage ventilation in a large tent?

Look for several high and low vents, windows with mosquito mesh, a proper double skin and a porch that opens up. That way you reduce condensation.

Which layout is most practical for families?

A central living area plus 2–3 bedrooms (2–3 berths each) and a deep porch (at least 80–100 cm). Room dividers help with privacy.

How long does pitching take?

Between 15 and 35 minutes, depending on the system and your experience. Inflatable tents (1–2 main air beams) can be up in 10–15 minutes.

Weight and transport: what should I plan for?

These tents usually weigh 15–35 kg and pack into a large bag. Check your boot space and consider a trolley if it is a long walk to your pitch.

Is the groundsheet sewn in or separate?

On many large tents the living area has a bathtub groundsheet (better against water and insects). If it doesn’t, add a footprint to protect it and keep it watertight.

Do they stand up well to wind?

Check for plenty of guy lines, good-quality pegs (better than the ones supplied), reinforced anchor points and a crossed-pole or multi-arch frame.

How do I stop mould?

Dry it completely before storing, air it when you get home and avoid airtight bags if there is any damp. Clean with mild soap (no bleach) and re-proof it when water stops beading.

How big a pitch do I need at a campsite?

Check the tent’s full footprint (length × width plus guy lines). Many campsites offer pitches of 60–90 m²; confirm before booking.

Which accessories make the biggest difference?

A footprint, a tent carpet, premium pegs, reflective guy lines, LED lighting with safe wiring, a hanging organiser and a windbreak for outdoor cooking.

How long does a tent last?

With holiday use and good care, 5–8 seasons. UV light breaks down fabric, so keep it out of the sun when you aren’t using it for long periods.
