It’s a freestanding structure (like a gazebo or awning) that gives you shade and a covered area for eating, cooking (always well ventilated) or sheltering from light rain.
An awning attaches to a specific tent or caravan; a gazebo is universal: you put it wherever suits you and it can cover tables, the kitchen or a shared area.
As a guide: 3×3 m (table + 4–6 chairs), 3×4.5 m or 3×6 m for groups of 6–10. Look for headroom of at least 200–220 cm so you can stand up.
Steel: sturdier and cheaper, but heavier.
Aluminium: light and corrosion-resistant; usually more expensive.

Yes, if it’s well tensioned and anchored: use guy lines, quality pegs and, on pop-up models, weights or sandbags on the legs. In a real storm, it’s safer to take it down.
Yes, with plenty of ventilation (open sides) and a windbreak. Never use a stove with the walls closed and no ventilation; keep it away from the fabric and have an extinguisher or fire blanket to hand.
Yes: they block wind and driving rain, give privacy and keep out insects. Look for interchangeable ones (mesh/fabric) with zips and clear windows.
Pegs suited to the ground (sand, grass, hard ground), straps tensioned at 45° and ballast on the legs (sandbags/weights). Check the tension again after 10–15 min.
Many models take a gutter to connect them to a tent, van or caravan and stop water getting in between the roofs.
Pop-up 3×3 m: 12–25 kg (sometimes in a long wheeled bag). Pole-frame: 10–20 kg in separate bundles (poles and roof/walls).
Clean with mild soap, rinse off salt and sand, dry it completely before storing and never store it damp (mould). Reproof if water no longer beads.
Some campsites limit sizes or the use of closed walls because of wind or fire risk. Check the rules before putting it up.
Walls (mesh/fabric), a connecting gutter, quality stakes/weights, clear curtains, IP65 LED strips, hooks for lamps and storage bags.
