As we’ve said on other pages of our site, the first thing to consider is how many people will use the tent, that is, how many are going on the trip. Then think about whether you want separate tents for smaller groups or one family-sized tent.
At the following link we review the best family tents on the market and show you our favourite and recommended family tents. That should clear up some doubts when choosing the one that best suits your needs.
What should I look for when buying a family tent?
One tip: think about comfort first when travelling (as compact as possible so it doesn’t take up space in transport, and not too heavy). To do that, consider the following:
Price
Bear in mind that family tents cost more or less depending on the space inside. On our best family tents page, linked above, our comparison shows you the tent with the perfect size for families, the cheapest and the largest, which naturally costs a bit more.
But as with everything, more quality and durability means a higher cost. Don’t worry: our comparisons take all this into account, and here you’ll find the comparison table of the best family tents.
Space
When you travel with your family, what you need most is the right amount of space, giving you all the comfort you need, whether for sleeping or spending the day inside.
Ask yourself: is there enough room to store luggage? Is it spacious enough for everyone? Trust me, the most important thing in a family tent is space: you’ll be glad of it.
Material
The material should be a high-quality fabric, such as treated cotton or polyester. The poles should always be fibreglass or another durable material such as aluminium, and the pegs iron (there are always exceptions, but that’s our recommendation).
Openings
Another important factor is the windows and doors. You’ll notice that, besides the main entrance, a tent has other side openings and even secondary doors. The more openings, the more control you have over the temperature inside, and so the better the quality. That said, in many cases the manufacturer will fit only the openings the tent strictly needs.
Also try to make sure each bedroom or section of the tent has its own opening, so whoever sleeps there can adjust the temperature to suit them. As always, it should have mosquito nets.
