How do you orient a tent?

When we plan a camping trip, whether to the beach or the mountains, we tend to forget one detail that is fundamental to our comfort. And no, it isn’t bringing enough water or food, choosing the right footwear or deciding how to get there.

When it comes to camping, knowing how to orient a tent is just as important as knowing how to pitch a tent. In fact, orientation isn’t just about knowing where north and south are, but also about knowing the best spot to set up our little home and what time it’s best to arrive.

Picture the scene: we’ve reached our chosen spot fairly early, with enough time to do the first step calmly. It’s time to lay the foundations of our tent. We’ve carefully cleared the ground where we’re going to settle and even made a bed of leaves to sleep more softly. We’re about to put up the frame when suddenly we’re not sure how to orient the tent, and a question comes to mind: what should we do?

Orienting a tent is much easier than it seems if you bear these four tips in mind:

Steps to orient your tent

  • Point the back of the tent straight towards where any storms may come from: you’ll be better protected and won’t have to sleep on wet ground.
  • One of the best ways to orient the tent is to face an entrance east. That way the sun will wake you up in the morning, which out in nature is a real gift.
  • Always try to pitch your tent as far as possible from any hollows in the ground, so puddles don’t form underneath if it rains. A very good tip is to pitch on higher ground.
  • Always pitch your tent at a safe distance from the fire, so that any sparks don’t land directly on your little shelter. And remember: always put the fire out before you go to sleep!

As we said, orienting the tent is one of the most overlooked tasks when planning, yet one of the most important once you’re there. That’s why we recommend that, while planning your adventure, you take a list of tips and advice to help you remember how to orient your tent. After that, all that’s left is to enjoy it.
